  Research

The Research Department has been developing innovative solutions in the arena of electromagnetics for over 15 years . From the start the research group has been closely involved in sensor and range product development from initial concept through to design, implementation and support. Ultra Magnetics are world leaders in vessel signature modelling and prediction. Magnetic dipole modelling algorithms were first developed in 1984, followed by complementary work in the field of vessel design using Finite Element Analysis (FEA) in 1989.

Research capabilities include:

Electromagnetic Modelling
Modelling of DC and AC electromagnetic fields can be undertaken using dipole models. Such algorithms are widely used for modelling marine vessels using the Transmag range system.

Finite Element Modelling
Finite element (FE) modelling can be used to determine DC and AC electric and magnetic signatures of items. For example in order to design a degaussing system an FE model of a vessel can be determined from knowing the vessel structure and composition. This model can be used to determine the vessel's magnetic signature and hence the degaussing coils position and current requirements at an early stage in the vessel design.

Boundary Element Modelling
Boundary element (BE) modelling can be used to determine the corrosion pattern and electric signature of a vessel. For example in order to design an ICCP system a BE model of a vessel can be determined from knowledge of the vessel's external structure and composition. This model can be used to determine the vessel's electric signature and hence the anode and electrode position and current requirements at an early stage in the vessel design.

Threat and signature analysis
Recent conflict experience has highlighted the threat from mines to sea going vessels. The precise threat can be analysed using modelling and FE methods. Such analysis is particularly important in littoral water scenario.

Custom Sensor Design
Theoretical and experimental sensor design studies can be carried out in order to meet the customer's individual requirements. Novel applications of current technolgies can be investigated.

For information

Tracking Algorithms
Magnetic items can be tracked using algorithms which utilise the item's magnetic signature. For example an array of magnetic sensors could be used not only to detect an object but also to determine its heading and speed.

Experimental Studies and Trials Work
Trials and experimental investigations are undertaken for customers. A team of experienced scientists and engineers are available for trials work in the UK and abroad.
