ULTRA WINS METRO SUBSTATION CONTRACT

Ultra announces that its PMES business, based in Rugeley, Staffordshire, has been awarded a contract for its specialist transit DC electrical power systems from MPACT-Thales as part of the third phase of the Manchester Metrolink extension project. The sub-stations will be delivered and commissioned during a three-year period commencing in 2009.

The extended lines will run to Oldham and Rochdale, Droylsden in Tameside (to the East of Manchester), and Chorlton in south Manchester - nearly doubling the size of the network. There will also be a short spur to MediaCityUK development. The extension is intended to take five million car journeys off local roads every year and to increase the number of daily passenger trips on the network from 55,000 to more than 90,000.

Ultra’s scope of work under this contract includes the design, supply, delivery, installation and commissioning of thirteen DC substations.

Douglas Caster, Chief Executive of Ultra, commented:
“Ultra has a proven track record as a supplier of advanced, turnkey substation systems to rail operators and prime contractors and is playing a significant role in the upgrade of London’s transport infrastructure in preparation for the 2012 Olympics. We now look forward to being a valued partner to MPact-Thales by delivering a modern, reliable power system for Manchester Metrolink.”
